The Place for Arctic Char Since 1981
Torngat Fish Co-op is famous for our Arctic char. Caught fresh and wild off the Labrador Sea’s icy coast, these are vacuum packaged and frozen quick to preserve their unique flavour. As a cousin to the salmon, Arctic char is a low-fat alternative to other seafood and has a rich taste that’s been described as a cross between salmon and freshwater trout.
While Arctic char season runs from July through September, we use state-of-the-art processing to keep them fresh all year-round. Each char is hand-selected to ensure consistent taste and quality. Arctic char can be prepared in several different ways:
- Smoked
- Head-On Gutted (HOG)
- Skin-On-Pin, Bone-In Natural Fillets
- Smoked Frames (According to Inuit Customs)
As each Arctic char is roughly two to four pounds (or more) in weight, we smoke them for three hours, so the flavour penetrates the whole fish.
ARCTIC CHAR IN ABORIGINAL CUISINE
Arctic char carries a strong association with aboriginal cultures in the north and is considered a delicacy in Labrador. Our premium, wild Arctic char is harvested by Inuit fishermen from the Labrador Sea’s pristine waters. We process each Arctic char quickly as to preserve the exceptional taste and quality. All Arctic char is processed at our facility in Nain, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Whether served as a cold or hot meal or appetizer, we’re sure you’ll love this traditional Labrador delicacy!
